Classic Christmas tunes filled the air of what turned out to be a cold December night in Diliman on Thursday, but they weren't performed by amateur carolers or singers.

No, this was the official public debut of the University of the Philippines Symphony Orchestra (UPSO), which under the command of Prof. Chino Toledo lavished care on and attention to local holiday songs.

Everything about the symphony was designed to elicit feelings of nostalgia, featuring the levity of Leroy Anderson's popular songs such as "Sleigh Ride" and Ryan Cayabyab's "Mano Po Ninong, Mano Po Ninang."

The committed orchestra of 65 musicians was dubbed "Sixty-Five-Strong," off the university's historic "16 Strong" basketball team which made it to the UAAP finals.

The members are students, faculty, staff, and alumni from the UP Diliman, Manila, and Los Baños campuses, all of whom swore to uphold the mantra of "musikang may utak at puso."

This strong sense of school pride shone brightest Thursday night at the UP Diliman's Quezon Hall, where the group played a rendition of "UP Naming Mahal" to an enamored crowd.

Overall and ignoring the brevity of the set (it ran for just more than an hour long), this was an exemplary glimpse of the university's first official orchestra, and will no doubt help drum up the hype for its more formal introduction in February next year.
