Gray was among the 94 candidates from around the world who competed in the event, which helps judges determine the top 20 to be announced on coronation day on December 17.

Aside from the swimsuit competition, the preliminary pageant also saw the candidates taking turns on stage in their evening gowns.

In a first in Miss Universe’s 67-year run, the selection committee is composed entirely of women. It’s also the first time in over 20 years that the preliminary selection committee will also be the panel of judges on coronation day.

Prior to the preliminary competition on Thursday, Gray, along with her fellow candidates, met with the selection committee through individual interviews about their accomplishments and aspirations.

If Gray succeeds in being crowned Miss Universe, she would be the fourth Filipina to do so after Pia Wurtzbach in 2015, Margie Moran in 1973, and Gloria Diaz in 1969.
