MANILA – Japanese apparel brand Uniqlo celebrates its sixth year in the Philippines by opening a global flagship store, the biggest in Southeast Asia.

Uniqlo Manila covers 4,100 square meters, occupying two levels of the Glorietta 5 shopping mall in Makati City.

It opened to the public at 10 a.m. on Friday.

“I am very happy to introduce all of you here in Manila [to our flagship store],” said Uniqlo founder Tadashi Yanai during the preview launch for guests and members of the media on Thursday. “We are very much pleased to be here.”

Known for its quality, affordable basics, Uniqlo was brought to the Philippines by the SM Investments Corp. led by Tessie Sy-Coson.

Since opening in 2012, the brand now has 51 stores in the country.

“[The global flagship store] is here in Ayala Center,” Sy-Coson said in jest to her friendly rival Fernando Zobel de Ayala, who was also present during the launch.

“The opening of the Uniqlo global flagship store has reminded me that it has been six years of great partnership between Uniqlo and SM, starting in 2012 when we first opened the Uniqlo store in the Mall of Asia,” she continued.

“The success around the world reflects the success of Mr. Tadashi Yanai, the man behind the brand, and a leader I admire.”

Aside from Uniqlo executives and local partners, celebrities led by brand ambassadors Pia Wurtzbach and Atom Araullo also graced the preview launch of the global flagship store.

Uniqlo Manila boasts of a full selection of LifeWear – the brand’s everyday clothing – as well as sections dedicated to innerwear (AIRism and Heattech), fall and winter outfits, and shirt collaborations (UT, Magic for All, Jump Force).

It also has iconic global flagship store features such as revolving mannequins in the atrium display windows, and stunning LED displays.

But perhaps what makes the new store extra special are the Filipino touches – a design project featuring Uniqlo Manila “future hero” ambassador Leeroy New and Japanese stylist Shun Watanabe; art pillars by members of the local design group Plus63 Design; in-store music by local acts led by Erwin Romulo and Malek Lopez; and a terrace with lounge furniture by Kenneth Cobonpue.
