New eats: Edward and Wallis replaces Lucia at Hotel Celeste

MANILA -- Hotel Celeste recently launched Edward and Wallis as its new primary dining outlet.

Occupying the spot once occupied by Lucia Ristorante, Edward and Wallis serves continental dishes inspired by the famed romance of Edward VII and Wallis Simpson.

Edward VII abdicated the British throne to marry the American Simpson in 1936. It was a big scandal during the time, but ultimately is remembered as a great romantic story.

The restaurant's interiors were re-done to suggest that romance. Chairs were re-upholstered in rich red and vibrant royal blue, and lighting fixtures, as well as various knick-knacks strategically placed around the restaurant, were chosen to evoke Old World glamor.

Framed with a bespoke signature ceiling mural, all these gave the restaurant an understated elegant ambiance.

Edward and Wallis, tucked away in a less busy part of Makati, has an extensive menu whether you’re looking for a quiet place for a power lunch or a setting for a romantic evening.

Start your meal with soup! Take the classic route with a lemony French Onion soup, or try something different with the curry tinged cream-based Curry Carrot Vicchy. Jeeves de Veyra

Fresh fruit and mesclun greens made for a refreshing start to a meal, as orange slices and red dragon fruit were sweet and tart highlights to the greens dressed in citrus-balsamic vinaigrette. Jeeves de Veyra

For something light and healthy, order the Seared Salmon with Dill Cream, which came pan-fried with a beautiful crust and a side of mashed potato, paired with a classic dill cream sauce. Jeeves de Veyra

Want something with more heft? The Grilled Prawn Risotto is stunning when it comes to the table, rich and creamy cheesy risotto framed with beautifully grilled prawns. Jeeves de Veyra

The Grilled Peruvian Chicken was juicy and moderately spiced; it’s the accompanying chimichurri rice that makes this dish sing. It was so good that we ordered an extra cup! Jeeves de Veyra

The Porkloin Chop Americaine should appeal to meat-lovers. A serving features a big chop dappled with a generous amount of bordelaise sauce -- peppery and rich, with mashed potatoes, salads and veggies. Jeeves de Veyra

For dessert, Edward and Wallis has very accessible options like the Tiramisu and the Crème Brulee -- both creamy, and not too sweet. Jeeves de Veyra
