MANILA - A portion of Roxas Boulevard now glistens at night after the capital city completed the installation of 12,000 capiz lights on rows of trees across the Manila Bay on Monday.

The small LED bulbs enclosed in capiz lanterns dangle on trees along the 3-kilometer stretch of the coast-side thoroughfare, from Vito Cruz to Kalaw Avenue.

Some 4,000 other lanterns were earlier installed in 3 other parks in Manila last month.

“We use these capiz lights because they are made out of native materials and they look like fireflies from afar,” Manila Mayor Isko Moreno told an ambassador who earlier asked about the decor.

“We are trying to preserve Manila’s history and heritage because that is our real treasure,” he said.

The weather-proof capiz lights are also more energy efficient compared to other bulbs, Manila City Electrical Division officer in charge Engr. Randy Sada told ABS-CBN News.

“LED lamps ito so tumatagal talaga siya,” he said. “At least mga 2 years ito bago mapundi, wag lang siya ma-ano [mahulog] pag bumabagyo.”

(These are LED lamps so it really lasts. It would take about 2 years before it needs to be replaced, unless it falls off during typhoons.)

Sada said the bulbs are cheaper, but did not disclose their price.

The capiz lanterns along Roxas Boulevard were donated by the Lions Club, an non-international service organization.

The local government plans to install more capiz lanterns in some 40 other parks in the capital, in line with Moreno’s push to build more open spaces in Metro Manila’s second-most populous city, Sada said.

“Nabubuhay yung trees na malalaki pag nalalagyan ng capiz lanterns,” he said. “Simple lang, but may attraction sa mata.”
