MANILA — Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray was among the high-profile personalities who spoke out Friday against the arrest of Pride month demonstrators in Manila.

On Instagram, Gray shared a viral photo of a crumpled Pride flag in the hand of a uniformed personnel, captioned, "Is this the new normal?"

"Earlier today a peaceful #PRIDE rally held in Manila where mask wearing participants practicing social distancing were met by police in riot gear and arrested. When questioned by the witnesses and media about the reason or violations for arrest, the police gave no response," she wrote.

"If proper health guidelines were being followed, (social distancing, mask wearing) why the use of force? Why the withholding of rights (witnesses said they were not read their miranda rights before arrest nor given reason of arrest)? Videos circulating online confirm this."

Several participants in the Pride march in Mendiola were arrested Friday morning, with police alleging later on that they had violated coronavirus protocols like physical distancing.

"We have the right to raise our voice," Gray said. "Pride, since the beginning has been a protest. Now is the time to speak up."

Gray, who has been an outspoken ally of the queer community, then used the hashtag #FreePride20, referring to the those arrested during the march.
