TAGAYTAY – From eating buko pie to enjoying bulalo with the scenic view of Taal Volcano, locals who frequent Tagaytay City may have already done it all. It begs the question now if there is anything else left to do in the already touristy city.

I may have found one in my most recent trip. And it is literally a breath of fresh air.

Located on the outskirts of Tagaytay City just at the boundary of Nasugbu, Batangas is Chateau Royale. It’s a family resort that sits on 15 hectares right on the foot of Mount Batulao. The resort itself has its limitations like weak mobile signal in some areas, dated interiors and slow service because of the massive space it covers. But it has its own charm.

And while it has some modern additions like a wave pool, a zip line facility and an obstacle course for team-building activities, its real beauty lies in its open spaces and natural environment. Part of that of course is the resort’s own organic farm.

The fully functioning farm is situated at the far end of Chateau Royale. The scene there is quiet, airy and lush which is a real treat for Manileños like myself, who are escaping the urban jungle. There you can enjoy a picturesque sunflower garden, makes friends with a resident horse and visit some of the greenhouses on the farm.

And yes, you can pick your own vegetables to take home. Available produce include onions, labuyo chilies, lettuce, chives, tarragon, tomatoes, and Baguio beans.

Prices are not as competitive as the ones at your local groceries or markets but will likely match or beat those from its fellow organic stores.

But who’s counting? If you add the novelty of picking your own food fresh from where it was grown, then it sure is worth the premium and the drive.
