VIGAN CITY - The heritage city's famous calesas or horse-drawn carriages took center stage as Vigan City celebrated the Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts this week.
Calesas play a vital role in the city's tourism industry as they not only serve as transportation for tourists, they are tourist attractions themselves.
This week, colorful and especially decorated calesas paraded along the Spanish-era city's world-renowned streets to showcase its unique culture and traditions.
"Nakakatuwa na makita ang mga tao na lumalapit at nagpa-picture sa aming mga kalesa," Ronald Bare, a coachman, said.
Both foreign and local tourists were also amazed at how the carriages were decorated.
"Very beautiful, it is special," Markus Hildebrand said.
"Napakaganda na makita ang iba’t ibang dekorasyon sa mga kalesa," Crisilyn Rabang added.
The festival, which features the rich culture, tradition and artistry of the city, will end on Sunday, May 7.
It is also the local government's way of encouraging more tourists to visit the only UNESCO Heritage City in the Philippines, and one of the New 7 Wonder Cities of the World.
