HOLLYWOOD - Nico Santos can’t help but excitedly laugh when talking about his latest casting news. He will be in a new play starring an Oscar winner, written by an Oscar nominee.

“Ewan ko nga ba kung anong nangyayari sa buhay ko,” he gushed in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

“I’d go to New York. I am gonna be in an off-Broadway play that’s written by Jesse Eisenberg called ‘Happy Talk.’ It stars Marin Ireland, who is a Tony nominee, and Susan Sarandon,” Santos said.

“It’s an incredible new play. I can’t wait to be a part of it. It’s been a while since I’ve been on stage in a theater capacity. I am really excited to take on this new challenge,” he added.

He said he appreciates the focus and training that theater provides for actors.

“Kapag nasa TV or sa movie, puwedeng cut, I’ll do another take or I’ll do that again. Kapag stage, walang take two. Kailangan hasang-hasa ka talaga,” he said.

On TV, he is still proudly representing as Matteo, the undocumented and gay Filipino immigrant, on the show “Superstore.” His storyline has given the show consecutive GLAAD Awards nominations.

“We are still continuing season four. We go back to film season five. I can’t believe it. We are going to start in July,” he said.

Apart from Santos, another Filipino talent is involved in “Happy Talk.” Tony winner Clint Ramos is its costume designer.

Santos is currently in New York for rehearsals. “Happy Talk” will begin previews on April 30 at the Pershing Square Signature Center.
