MANILA -- Toyo Eatery remains the lone Philippine entry in the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list, as revealed in a "virtual announcement" on Tuesday.

The restaurant helmed by chef Jordy Navarra ranked 44th in the 2020 edition -- one spot lower that last year's 43rd -- in the list that many consider as an alternative to other rating systems like Michelin stars.

"Taking inspiration from their Filipino heritage, the Navarras champion their cultural roots into a truly innovative menu," said William Drew, director for content at 50 Best, as one of the presenters.

Taking the number one spot for the second year is Odette, a restaurant in Singapore. The rest of the Top 10 include entries from Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand.

A total of 300 experts across the region cast their votes to come up with the list of Asia's 50 Best Restaurants for 2020.

The announcement was originally set to be held in Japan's Saga prefecture, but organizers ended up mounting an online event due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

At the start of the video, Drew said the awards show is "not a celebration" but their way of supporting the efforts of members of the restaurant industry amid the COVID-19 crisis.

"This time, more than ever, the restaurant sector needs support, and recognizing the hard work and talent of teams and individuals remains valid," he said.

"The decision to proceed [with the awards show] was made after consulting with chefs and restaurateurs, and other leading figures in gastronomy across Asia," he added. "So today is about supporting Asia. The list and awards aim to offer some small rays of positivity even in these dark days."

"Let's keep our community connected, united, and prepare for recovery once the situation improves."
