MANILA – Fifty-two women are set to compete for the opportunity to represent the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant this year.

The candidates for the first-ever Miss Universe Philippines (MUP) competition were introduced to members of the media at the Manila Hotel on Friday.

All of them wore modern interpretations of Filipiniana attire – from terno pantsuits to dresses that showcase local garments – and sashes showing names of the cities they represent.

Set on May 3 at the Mall of Asia Arena, MUP 2020 is organized by a new namesake organization led by Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup.

This marks the end of an era as Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. let go of the Miss Universe franchise in the Philippines after more than 50 years.
