LAOAG CITY- Decorated kalesas paraded along the main street of Laoag City Wednesday evening as part of its annual fiesta.

These kalesas were of various shapes and colors adorned with lights, making them shinier and brighter as they passed by the excited crowd.

There was a 'bahay-kubo'-themed kalesa covered with anahaw leaves.

Other attractive kalesas were patterned after other popular landmarks in Laoag City such as the St. William Cathedral and Sinking Bell Tower.

An image of former president Ferdinand Marcos was also painted on a kalesa.

Most of the kalesas were made of indigenous materials.

Spectator Noel Batuyong said the kalesa parade is becoming more and more glamorous each year.

"Every year talaga may kanya-kanyang pasabog which is nakakaproud kasi bilang Ilokano, ang saya saya nilang panooorin. Despite na kahit ano mang nangyayari we are still one na magce-celebrate pa din," Batuyong said.

Kalesas are still being use as a mode of transportation in Laoag City.

A kalesa ride costs P11 for a short trip not exceeding 1 kilometer.

The kalesa was introduced by the Spaniards during their regime.

Back then, it was only the rich people who can afford this mode of transportation.
