MANILA -- Some people may not know yet but Shay Mitchell, who is one of the lead stars of the new Netflix series “You,” actually has Filipino roots.

The Hollywood actress has a Filipino mom, who left the Philippines to live abroad at the age of 19. Mitchell has been to the country more than once, her current visit being the third time.

Hence, it was just logical for her to be asked where she plans to bring her “You” co-star Penn Badgely who is also in Manila with her to promote the show.

So now, I am going to order pancit bihon and lumpiang shanghai. I want it fried. When they gave it to me, I was like, what is this?” she said, laughing.

Badgley said he likes working and doing press with Mitchell because he feels they are different but they mix so well just like the ingredients of “halo halo.”

“I love certain Filipino food, but I am more on the vegetarian side. I don’t do much of the adobo, but I like the sauce on rice. I won’t do the purple egg or the egg that hasn’t hatched yet. That’s a challenge. I am only half Filipino when it comes to that because the other half is like, ‘No sister,’” she said.

“You know, I think the fact that the other girls are obsessed with Broadway and musical theaters, Penn and I not so much, my second cousin is Lea but I don’t share the same talent in voice as she does. I think one of the funny moments was when they all found out,” she said.
