A pastor of the United Christian Fellowship - Assembly of God escaped the wrath of typhoon Ompong as it battered Itogon, Benguet over the weekend and caused landslides.

Pastor Bonifacio Patlong was in Kalinga when their chapel in Ucab, Itogon got buried in a landslide.

"Our church leader and the 9 youths were leading the worship and prayer in that area," he told ABS-CBN News.

Some members of the church, who were practicing at the chapel for the Sunday service when the landslide occurred, are still missing.

Parents of the missing church members lamented the loss of their children.

"Hindi ko lubos maisip na wala na siya. Pumunta siya dito kasi gusto niya makapag-aral. Nakakakuha kasi ng tulong pinansyal mula sa simbahan," said Rollie Pigwasan, father of 22-year-old Rodel, who was the church's lead guitarist.

(I can't imagine him gone. He went here because he wanted to study, he got financial aid from the church.)

Puson Battawang, meanwhile, mourned the death of Stephen, his 20-year-old firstborn child, who served as a drummer in the church.

A week before the tragedy, one of the pastors warned the residents about the impending danger of Ompong.

"Sabi ni Sister Jasmine noon na bibigyan sila ng abiso (Sister Jasmine said they will warn them) to leave the place. She told us, the women of the church, 'This is now our graveyard'," pastor Mary Jane Baccodong said.
