MANILA - The Supreme Court, in a majority vote, invalidated on Friday the appointment of Maria Lourdes Sereno as chief justice.
Eight justices voted to oust Sereno, while six others voted to reject the quo warranto petition seeking her removal.
The ruling stands as the first time in Philippine history that a chief justice was removed through a quo warranto plea.
Sereno is expected to file a motion for reconsideration.
The first woman to hold the top post in the judiciary, Sereno was supposed to stay in her post until her retirement at age 70 in 2030.
