MANILA — Coritha, a revered figure in the Philippine music scene, passed away on Friday, September 27, at 7:50 in the evening.

Her death was confirmed by Dr. Digna Santos, the youngest sister of Coritha’s partner, Luisito Santos.

The singer died at Santos’ residence in Barangay Maharlika East in Tagaytay City.

Coritha’s remains were cremated shortly after, at around 10:30 p.m..

“She died Friday at 7:50 p.m. tapos ano na ‘yun after that we contacted the barangay officials in Tagaytay of Maharlika East,” Dr. Santos shared, adding her brother wanted Coritha's remains cremated as soon as possible.

Dr. Santos said Coritha’s health started to deteriorate on Monday.

Citing information from Coritha's caregivers, Dr. Santos said the singer had been struggling to breathe and had been exhibiting a weak pulse.

The family is still waiting to learn the official cause of death.

“Iba na rin yung istura ni Coritha nong before siya [nag] expire eh. Payat na payat na. Hindi na siya– wala nang verbal contact, eye contact lang,” Dr. Santos revealed.

“We’re presuming or we’re thinking na pneumonia na. Nag set in na yung pneumonia dahil pabago bago ang weather sa Tagaytay. Uulan, lalamig, tapos iinit. So, we’re thinking na that's one of the reasons na nag set-in na yung pneumonia. So sa condition niya, hindi na niya kakayanin ang pneumonia,” she added.

Dr. Santos said a viewing for Coritha is set on October 5, from the afternoon, until the morning of October 6, at their home in Barangay Maharlika East, Tagaytay City.

“Pumayag ang kapatid ko na mag viewing muna ng 1 day, 1 night… ini-schedule namin siya for Saturday, October 5 afternoon hanggang Sunday morning,” said Dr. Santos.

Friends from the music industry are expected to attend, though Dr. Santos mentioned that some relatives have not been in contact since Coritha’s illness.

“Hindi sila (relatives of Coritha) nakikipag-coordinate sa kapatid ko. No text, no calls, nothing… I guess kahit nung may sakit, wala namg pumupunta. It was well publicized sa social media pero wala namn pumupunta to visit her,” Dr. Santos shared.

The family is still deliberating on the final resting peace for her urn, which will remain at their home for now.

The OPM icon's songs that hit the aiwaves include "Oras Na", " Lolo Jose" and "Sierra Madre".
