It was an event that started with the story of an "apple" and ended with "pure energy."

The city of Carson in California celebrated Philippine Independence Day with its annual parade, performances, food and all-out festivities this past weekend.

The event brought thousands to the Filipino hub of California.

"It's all about a team as one," said Carson city council member Arleen Bocatija Roxas. "What a great day for getting our community together and celebrating our culture."

Filipino-American Apl.de.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas was honored at the event as a grand Marshall for his work as an artist and a humanitarian.

As thousands watched him perform, he made sure one special guest saw the show -- his mother.

"My mom flew from the Philippines," said the rapper-singer, whose real name is Allan Pineda. "We haven’t seen each other since the pandemic and she’s here to cook all the amazing dishes."

He added: "This is a special moment. It's our day as Filipinos representing our culture."

Veteran Filipino singer and TV personality Gary Valenciano also made it a family affair as he hit the stage with his children Gab and Kiana.

Along with more family members dancing, he brought in extra energy for over an hour with an unforgettable performance.

"It's nice when you can bring the family over and it’s not just music, it's food, merchandise," said Valenciano. "Things were going on so people get the entire package, not only entertainment."

The Independence Day event in Carson has drawn thousands annually. It has become a tradition that many families, community leaders, and officials from all over Southern California look forward to.

"At the end of the day, it’s about doing something the community enjoys. It’s our small way of giving back to our community," said Fred Docdocil, president of the Philippine Independence Day Foundation.

The celebration this year was made even more special as The Filipino Channel marks its 30th anniversary.

TFC continues its partnership with Carson, allowing many “Kapamilyas” like the Decena family to feel right at home when they come out to events and meet their favorite celebrities.

"We used to be so homesick. But TFC is here," said Mike Decena. "It brings us the joy of staying at home. Watching TFC is a big part of our life."

Carson has proven itself to be among the most festive communities in the country with its celebration of Philippine Independence Day.
