MANILA — Former couple Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto admitted that they are navigating their "familiar yet new" work environment for their new film.

"Para siyang familiar at new place at the same time, this feels familiar pero bago rin because parang when we're re-getting to know each other," Barretto said.

During a screen test for their movie "Un/happy For You," Garcia that it will be a step-by-step process again for them to familiarize themselves with each other.

"Kinakapa pa rin namin 'yung isa't isa kahit ang tagal na naming nagkatrabaho, baby steps, darating din kami roon sa shoot day namin," Garcia said.

"Tsaka kasi nakita ko nung nagsi-scene kami parang iba na rin 'yung atake niya ngayon, sa atake niya before, he added.

Director Petersen Vargas said that "Un/happy For You" would be a different take on Barretto and Garcia's chemistry.

"I'm privileged enough to put my own stamp on a JoshLia film, just because I've seen all of their films together ... They could expect like what would be my take on it," Vargas said.

"Kasi as their viewer over the years, I feel like this films that we're gonna release this year is the film that I would see both of them to be making this year, kumbaga as an audience, ito 'yung gusto kong papanooring JoshLia," he added.

Garcia and Barretto said moviegoers can expect "pain and healing" in their new film.

"I didn't expect it to be super far from probably what we had all experienced in lives, not just him and I, siyempre but it's a very general feeling that everyone goes through," Barretto said.

"There are some things that still linger so it would be a painful and hopefully a healing movie for a lot of people," she added.

"Nasaktan din naman ako, I'm pretty sure, ikaw din nasaktan ka rin sa buhay and tayo bilang actors feeling ko 'di tayo mahihirapan sa pag-portray ng mga characters natin," Garcia said.

The story of "Un/happy For You" will revolve around a story of two ex-lovers but the writers have yet to elaborate on other details to the story.

"Minsan sinasabi natin sa isang tao na 'I'm happy for you' pero sa totoong buhay natin, hindi tayo magpapaka-mature, magpapakatotoo tayo sometimes unhappy din naman tayo sa mga taong nanakit sa atin or sa mga taong may mga atraso sa 'tin kaya may slash kasi baka pwedeng happy ka doon sa tao na 'yun," writer Kookai Labayen said.

"Exes sila, nagkasakitan, may isang nanakit, may isang nasaktan, it's very real, very intense and magsasakitan talaga dito sa kwento," writer Crystal San Miguel added.

"Kasi kahit may history kayo, mag-ex kayo, 'yung pain continues, so this is what it's about, 'yung pain, 'yung complicated issues that happened if you really love each other back then. Maraming makaka-relate dito kasi lahat naman tayo nasasaktan, lahat tayo may experience with that. This is not your typical exes movie," Jen Chuaunsu said.
