MANILA—Paulo Avelino may be one of the most talented actors of his generation, but that did not exempt him from undergoing a meticulous audition for the musical "Ang Larawan."

On Tuesday's episode of "Tonight With Boy Abunda," he revealed that he went through a rigorous process, feeling all nervous and pressured as he sang before Celeste Legaspi, the producer and one of the cast members of the musical.

"I've always wanted to make a musical film, but not this early. And not this point of my career. Parang maaga, parang hilaw pa ako para kumanta sa pelikula," he said, admitting he was hesitant to audition at first.

Despite having cold feet, Avelino landed the role of Tony Javier, one of the major characters of the musical.

According to the young actor, who underwent a 6-month musical workshop under Ryan Cayabyab, the "Ang Larawan" team did a series of rehearsals until it finally perfected the right treatment for such a crucial character.

"Ang Larawan" is based on Nick Joaquin's "A Portrait of the Artist as a Filipino." Rolando Tinio, also a National Artist like Joaquin, translated the play to Filipino and wrote its libretto.
