MANILA - "It was how we handled the bad times," recalled Jake Zyrus. "Doon ko na-realize, 'I'm going to keep this person.' Hindi lang dahil sa love and iyon ang pinakamaganda doon."

A few days after it was revealed that he is engaged to his non-showbiz girlfriend, Shyre Aquino, the singer opened up about why he decided to take their relationship to the "next level."

Zyrus, who admittedly had his share of heartbreaks, explained that his current partner helped him deal with his anxiety and depression, especially after he came out as a trans male.

This, according to him, set Aquino apart and what ultimately pushed him to pop the question and "commit" his life to her.

"It's hard to be in a relationship with someone who has depression and anxiety kasi nandoon na lahat -- iyong mga insecurities," Zyrus said. "But she [Aquino] totally gets it."

"I believe she's very experienced with people who had the same issues as mine and nakikita ko iyong patience niya."

Aquino is said to be a registered nutritionist aside from being a fitness instructor. Her relationship with Zyrus was first made public back in August last year.

This week, it was revealed that they are engaged to be married. Zyrus described the feeling as a "dream come true."

"Bata pa lang ako I've always dreamed of having a family and being with someone na hindi lang mahal ka pero naiintindihan ka at sinusuportahan ka sa lahat ng bagay."

When prodded for details about their marriage, Zyrus begged for privacy but joked that "definitely it is not going to be here." Same-sex marriage is still not recognized in the Philippines.

He did say that they do plan to hold a ceremony in the country for both their families. He added though that he wouldn't be "surprised" if his mother will refuse to attend, given their recent spat about him not visiting his lola in the hospital.

Zyrus was speaking at press conference held to announce him as one of the performers for Frontrow Cares, billed as the biggest charity music festival this year featuring local artists.

It is organized by Frontrow and is set to be headlined by Zyrus, Billy Crawford, Parokya ni Edgar, Gloc-9, and Ely Buendia.

All of the proceeds from the events will go directly to the charity organizations Frontrow has partnered with, including Bahay Aruga, a non-government organization for the abandoned elderly.

Tickets are now on sale at SM Tickets. It will be held on December 16, Sunday, at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds in Pasay.
