MANILA -- Contrary to what most people believe, Regine Velasquez has never judged a singing contest.

The "Asia's Songbird," who is marking her 30th year in show business, shared in an interview with Metro.Style the reason why she never sat as a judge in a singing competition.

According to Velasquez, it's not that she was never interested -- she just does not want to be the cause of a contestant's disillusionment.

"What you don't want is the artist or the singer seeing you like that, with a disappointed face. You don't want that," she said, recalling her own experience as a rookie in the industry.

Velasquez is set to judge a singing contest for the first time via "Idol Philippines."

But she said she would rather see it as an opportunity to be a "sincere mentor" to up and coming talents.

"I think with my 32 years in the business, I'll be able to help them as far as performing, singing, technicalities, and all that. More of [mentoring] ang iniisip ko rather than the judging," she said.

Aside from being a judge on "Idol," Velasquez is also set to do a new sitcom and a movie as part of her return to the Kapamilya network.

She is also one of the main stars of the ABS-CBN musical variety show "ASAP Natin 'To."
