MANILA — Former child star Brenan Espartinez had judges of Tawag ng Tanghalan on their feet Monday, with a performance that reminded viewers of his talent after years away from the limelight.

Espartinez, who ‘90s kids may remember as the character Agatom in the educational TV program “Sineskwela,” was one of six celebrity contenders who performed on the first day of the week-long grand finals.

His smooth then soaring take on Luther Vandross’ “Always and Forever” prompted enthusiastic reactions from the judges, who then gave Espartinez a standing ovation at the end of his number.

The applauded performance earned Espartinez the highest score from the judges, making him the “Hurado’s Choice” of the day.

That means he will compete again as Tawag ng Tanghalan narrows down the contenders for its celebrity finale.

Radio DJ and singer Ana Ramsay, meanwhile, won over viewers as she was named “Madlang People’s Choice” with the most number of public votes. She performed Demi Lovato’s “Stone Cold,” which similarly got praise from the judges.

The other four celebrity contenders who performed on Monday were Leah Patricio, Rhap Salazar, Matmat Centino, and Justin Alva.
