MANILA — A lot can happen in a year, and this was evident as former couples Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson, and Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia each arrived without a date to the ABS-CBN Ball on Saturday.

Since 2016, or the duration of their three-year relationship until 2019, Alonzo and Anderson had walked the red carpet together at the annual gathering of stars.

Similarly, Barretto and Garcia attended three consecutive iterations of the ball starting in 2016, when their love team, which eventually blossomed into a real-life relationship, was formed.

In the four months leading up to the ball, both relationships were rocked by intrigues resulting in separate confirmations of a breakup.

Anderson and Barretto, who were first-time co-stars in the romance film “Between Maybes,” both denied that their newfound friendship was a factor in their respective separation, following rumors to that effect.

On Saturday, Alonzo, Anderson, Barretto, and Garcia each showed up without a partner on the red carpet.

Alonzo said doing so was “empowering” and “liberating,” noting that it was the first time in 10 years she went to the annual gathering of stars by herself.

Anderson, meanwhile, joked that he had several dates in his male co-stars in an upcoming action teleserye: Nash Aguas, Elmo Magalona, Yves Flores, and Jerome Ponce.

Barretto said she was “full of gratitude” for being part of ABS-CBN, which, through the ball, is celebrating 65 years of being in the service of Filipinos.

Garcia was more direct about going dateless, saying being “single” is something to be enjoyed, too, as much as being in love.
