Credited for ushering in the “Manila sound” of uniquely Filipino dance tunes in the ’70s, Hotdog remains a familiar presence today with the ubiquity of some of its greatest hits.
Over the years, ABS-CBN’s concert variety show “ASAP,” for instance, has featured time and again Hotdog’s memorable songs, with a twist, for the millennial audience.
Notably, ASAP Music released in 2006 a compilation album, “Hotsilog,” featuring the “jeprox” hits of Hotdog, with the likes of Sarah Geronimo and Piolo Pascual reviving “Pers Lab” and “Ikaw ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko.”
That Hotdog’s hits endures through performances of today’s teen idols and love teams is a testament to the timelessness not only of their message, but their sound.
With the recent passing of one of its founding members, Rene Garcia, here’s a look at past “ASAP” performances that celebrated the “Manila Sound” of Hotdog:
Star Magic love teams – Langit Na Naman
Toni Gonzaga – Bongga Ka ‘Day
Sarah Geronimo – Pers Lab
Erik Santos – Bitin Sa Iyo
