The 2018 Cinemalaya Film Festival opened on Friday with the latest from director Erik Matti, the action thriller "BuyBust."

Starring Kapamilya star Anne Curtis as an anti-drug agent who finds herself, along with a team of police officers, trapped inside a hellish drug den in Manila, Matti's film has been hailed as one of the best of its genre by international and local critics alike.

The movie was picked as the opener because organizers wanted to "put the spotlight on the groundbreaking indie action film."

"Nagustuhan ninyo ba?" Curtis asked those who caught the screening held at Cultural Center of the Philippines, before loud cheers of approval for their movie erupted.

She then nearly turned emotional after seeing the enthusiastic response, saying that the two years they spent shooting the movie was worth it because of the positive reviews.

"Sobrang nakakaiyak," she said.

"BuyBust," despite being the opener, will not be competing with the finalists of the festival. You can check those out here.

The festival will run until August 12.
