MANILA —Actress Heart Evangelista joined the list of celebrities who wants the controversial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 being pushed by the Duterte administration scrapped.

In an Instagram post on Thursday night, Evangelista said she can not support a law that could be easily abused.

“For the past few days, I have been reading the bill, as well as talking to different people — lawyers, human rights activists, and people I trust to educate myself and understand more about the Anti-Terror Bill and how this will affect us all. I don’t usually talk about my political views because I am no expert but today, I’m choosing to speak out and to use my platform to take a stand,” Evangelista wrote in the caption.

She added: “I am not an expert but I care and I know in my heart that this is wrong. I cannot support a law that could easily be abused just because they say that they won’t abuse it. Someone once said, ‘The history of liberty is a history of limitations on governmental power, not the increase of it. I hope those in power learn from history and heed this call.'”

Several celebrities have similarly backed the campaign to junk the controversial bill and the likes of Pia Wurtzbach, James Reid, Janine Gutierrez, Maris Racal, Enchong Dee, Nadine Lustre, Liza Soberano and Kathryn Bernardo have posted about the bill.

On Wednesday, Malacanang said the Anti-Terror Bill won't suppress free speech. The Palace also defended President Rodrigo Duterte's move to certify the bill as urgent amid the coronavirus crisis, saying it had been pending in Congress for four years.
