MANILA — Asked left and right why she remains single, a woman in her 40s finally musters courage to become “reckless and irresponsible,” leading to an affair with a young man in the steamy trailer for “Belle Douleur.”
The Cinemalaya entry, co-produced by Quantum Films and ABS-CBN’s iWant, follows the May-December romance of characters portrayed by Mylene Dizon and Kit Thompson.
The two cross paths when Dizon’s character puts up for sale old furniture and items in her ancestral home, capturing the interest of an antique collector and seller played Thompson.
“Belle Douleur,” which translates to “beautiful pain,” follows a woman’s “journey of finding happiness as she breaks free from the confines of society that shackles women,” the trailer’s description read.

The Joji Villanueva Alonso film will premiere on August 2, alongside other entries in the 2019 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.
