If there's a lesson to be learned from Maris Racal's recent interview where she talked about her collaboration with OPM icon Rico Blanco, it's this: don't shy away from letting your idols know how much you love them online. Who knows? They could be reading them and that may just lead to a dream project of yours.
That's exactly what happened with Racal, who threw a random invitation out on Twitter asking if there's someone who's willing to do a song with her.
Luckily, a fan who knew that she was a huge fan of Blanco because of her constant fangirling tagged him, and the result was "Abot Langit," which the former Rivermaya vocalist proudly described as a "gorgeous pop nugget" he had a pleasure composing.
She acknowledged to the Inquirer that she does not remember much from meeting Blanco in his studio for the first time. Only that she recalled running to her car afterwards and screaming in joy.
She did remember the one tip he gave her: "Mayroon din ako pinarinig sa kanya na I'm sure na sa taste niya, magugustuhan niya and then sabi niya, 'yung advice niya sa'kin sa age ko, 'Huwag ka munang dumiretso doon.'
"Doon ka muna sa sweet, pop, catchy song and then i-maintain mo lang siya until you can do your thing na which is 'yung artsy kind of songs. So yun yung advice niya sakin."
In an Instagram post announcing the release of "Abot Langit," Blanco credited Racal for coming up with the "main idea, hooks, and a charming naughty/nice vocal perfect for our little nod to the Japanese city pop vibe we both dig."
He revealed that he was the one who played all of the instruments used in the song, and that he "arranged, produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered" it as well.
