MANILA (UPDATED)— These are trying times for the local entertainment industry, no doubt, with the coronavirus pandemic freezing production for movies and television shows.

But according to director Erik Matti, another reason it is most likely “doomed in the future” is because of Filipinos’ obsession with Korean dramas.

Matti shared his pessimistic thoughts on Twitter this past week, noting how the top 10 most-watched shows on streaming site Netflix are K-dramas that are, he argued, mere “faux Cinderella stories.”

As of Friday, the top 10 shows in the country on Netflix are mostly Korean dramas. Only one is local, but is notably on the second spot —“For the Broken Hearted” starring Yassi Pressman and Sam Concepcion.

Matti's post received mostly negative comments, the bulk of which are show suggestions trying to disprove his "faux Cinderalla stories" take.

Some responses took jabs at his 2004 film "Gagamboy" and asked him if he heard clamor from Filipinos over the said movie's Cinderella story format.

"Gagamboy" is a movie starred by Vhong Navarro as an ice cream vendor which turns into a spider-based superhero after an accident at a local pharmaceutical lab.

Other Twitter users pointed out that Filipinos are tired of consuming the typical glorified mistress storyline from mainstream film industries.

The rest of the responses are directed to his "Belo-fied" comment about the stars of these shows, a reference to the biggest beauty and cosmetic house in the Philippines, Belo Medical Group.

Matti has always been vocal about this thoughts, especially with regards to the state of TV and film production. Last year, he described the film industry to be in a "state of coma," saying that there's an urgent need to try and regain their audience back.
