MANILA -- Veteran actor Tirso Cruz III marked his first birthday without his eldest son, TJ, who passed away last November after a months-long battle with cancer.

On Instagram, the actor, who celebrated his birthday on April 1, posted photos of the birthday surprise he received from his wife Lynn and their children Bodie and Djanin.

"GODly heavenly morning TJ. Well, your mama got me again! She, together with Bodie, Djanin, and some very special and dear friends, gave me a surprise birthday dinner party last night! Your mother never ceases to amaze me and I love her for all the wonderful things she has done for me. I was really caught completely off guard because the last thing on my mind was to celebrate. As your sister Djanin was approaching me with a cake, everyone was singing and greeting me," Cruz wrote in the caption.

"And in the midst of all this, I was crying. I was so happy and at the same time sad. Happy because I felt so loved by your mama, Bodie, Djanin and all the special friends who came. Sad, because it would have been the perfect surprise if only you were there to greet me too. But then again, I know you are happy for me too. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to say thank you to everyone who took time out from their busy schedules and came. Thank you so much for the love. As I awoke this morning, I felt your absence all the more on this special day in my life TEEJ! I love and miss you!" Cruz added.
