MANILA -- Even if she can no longer play the iconic Filipina superhero Darna, Angel Locsin is excited for the actress who will be starring in the much-awaited movie about the Mars Ravelo-created character.
"I'm very excited for her and sinusuportahan ko siya 100%. Sana ay suporahan din natin kung gaano niyo ako sinuportahan ay ibigay natin sa kanya kasi naniniwala talaga ako sa kanya," Locsin said in an interview with ABS-CBN News reporter MJ Felipe on Monday.
"I'm very excited na i-announce ng ABS-CBN kung sino ang mapipiling Darna. I think matutuwa ang lahat. May pinipili sila, wala pang final. May bet ako at tingin ko siya mapipili," she added.
Locsin said that if ever she's asked, she is more than willing to help the new Darna. "I can guide her. I can teach her," Locsin stressed.
On Monday, Star Cinema managing director Malou Santos announced that Locsin will no longer play Darna in the upcoming movie due to health reasons.
The film's director Erik Matti stressed that he and Star Cinema are just after the welfare of Locsin.
The announcement was made more than a year after Locsin backed out from doing the project after her spine was damaged.
"ABS-CBN, Star Cinema, and Angel Locsin have mutually arrived at a final decision that she will no longer pursue the 'Darna' movie due to her medical condition," ABS-CBN said in a statement.
"We gave Angel our full support during and after her treatment in hopes that she would portray the iconic Filipino heroine. Because of Angel’s passion and dedication, she resumed training for the movie after undergoing surgery and therapy for the disc bulge in her spine. Unfortunately, Angel experienced back pain twice during training, prompting her doctor to advise her not to participate in strenuous activities to avoid permanent damage on her spine.
"We would have loved to see Angel fly again as Darna and take our hats off to her for the gargantuan efforts she has put in for the project," the network said.
Locsin has already played Darna on television in 2005. The most recent TV incarnation of Darna is actress Marian Rivera, who appeared in a 2009 series on GMA-7.
