MANILA — Despite rains, fears over a new virus, and the absence of one member, K-pop boy band Seventeen powered through to deliver stellar performances for a packed crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena Saturday night.

The bad weather and concerns over the spread of a new strain of the coronavirus did not stop scores of fans — called “Carats” as in carats in diamonds — from trooping to the Pasay arena for the Philippine leg of Seventeen’s “Ode to You” tour, which also marked the group’s fourth concert in the country since they debuted in 2015.

Only 12 of the supposedly 13-member act performed in the show after leader S.Coups went on hiatus since last November to receive treatment for anxiety. Fans still showed support for him as loud cheers erupted each time he appeared on the video clips played in between concert sets.

Seventeen raised the energy as they kicked off the three-hour concert with “Getting Closer,” welcomed by the frenzied screams of Carats who waved the band’s signature light sticks. They followed the opening song with the addictive “Rock” and gritty pop-rock single “Clap.”

After the members introduced themselves one by one, the band performed “Thanks” and “Don't Wanna Cry,” songs with heavy leanings toward EDM and deeply sentimental lyrics

Each of Seventeen’s three “sub-units” (a K-pop jargon for sub-groups) also got the chance to shine in the show.

The hip-hop unit oozed with charisma as they performed “Trauma” and “Chili,” while the performance unit made fans swoon with “Lilili Yabbay” and “Shhh.”

The vocal unit set a mellow mood in the arena as they serenaded the crowd with “Hug” and “Don’t Listen in Secret.”

The hip-hop unit then teamed up with vocalist DK for “Space” before all 12 members took the stage to perform the fan-dedicated ballad “Smile Flower.”

The group, looking dapper in pastel outfits, then revisited the funky signature sound from their early years, singing their debut song “Adore U” and “Pretty U.” The playful atmosphere continued with “Oh My!” and “Just Do It.”

Despite being showered in sweat, the boys, clad in kimono-like tops, did not show any signs of exhaustion as they sang “Good to Me” and “Happy Ending.” The band then performed their latest single, “Fear,” as a faux last song.

For the encore set, Seventeen sang “9-Teen” before rocking the arena with the EDM banger “Hit” and finally concluding with “Very Nice.”

“I think after debuting, Manila is a place where we constantly came and every time we’re here, we’re always touched by you guys. I think tonight was the biggest touching moment of all,” said Seungkwan, reflecting on the concert as it neared its end.

Fans also greeted Dino, the group’s youngest member, for his upcoming birthday.

The entire show made it clear that Seventeen was one of the most well-rounded acts in K-pop today.

Each performance was a sight to behold as the members moved with the same intensity and in perfect synchronization — uneasy feats considering the group’s complex dance routines often involved ever-changing formations, stunts, and a bit of theatricality.

The band also showed they had some of the strongest pipes in K-pop as DK, Seungkwan, and Woozi effortlessly and soulfully belted out their lines and ad libs.

Virus scare

The concert pushed through despite fears over the novel coronavirus, which originated in China’s Wuhan city and has, as of Sunday, killed over 800 people and infected around 37,000.

As a measure against the virus, concert-goers were required to undergo temperature check through thermal scanning and accomplish a travel history form before they were allowed entry into the venue.

On Sunday, Seventeen’s management, Pledis Entertainment, announced that the remaining shows for the band’s tour were cancelled due to the novel coronavirus. The band was supposed to play in Malaysia, Taiwan, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

The Manila leg for Seventeen’s “Ode to You” tour was produced by PULP Live World and Pledis Entertainment.
