Aside from the Star Cinema film, National Artists for Film Kidlat Tahimik and film producer Bianca Balbuena will be given the Camera Obscura Artistic Excellence Award, the FDCP announced on Friday.

The award is the highest honor handed out by the FDCP during its annual Film Ambassadors’ Night, which is scheduled on Sunday.

The Camera Obscura is given to “films, filmmakers, and artists whose astounding achievements and breakthroughs have positively inspired the Philippine film industry to aspire to greater heights.”

“The Hows of Us,” which was directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, will receive the award for “making history in Philippine cinema by breaking the P800 million global box office record, making it the highest-grossing Filipino film to date and proving the competitive advantage of local films in the country,” the FDCP said.

Kidlat Tahimik, who was also recently honored with the Prince Claus Award in Amsterdam, is cited meanwhile for “leading the movement for independent cinema in the country and making major contributions in visual arts and film.”

A co-producer of acclaimed films like Lav Diaz’s “Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis” and Pepe Diokno’s “Engkwentro,” Balbuena is being honored for her “continued work in bridging the Philippines to the diverse filmmaking cultures in the world and giving opportunities to young and aspiring filmmakers.”

The Camera Obscura awardees will be joined in the ceremony by 86 more honorees comprised of Filipino winners in international film festivals in 2018.
