MANILA—For a few seconds after he was asked at the media launch on Friday about the possibility of another follow-up, this time focusing on Donny Pangilinan's Dave, who many presumed to be the one who will be heartbroken by the end of the film, Theodore Boborol, director of "James & Pat & Dave," paused.

He then asked back: Who ever said that Pat will choose James?

Ultimately, Boborol continued, this new Star Cinema offering will be about the optimist view that the pain of being rejected will make sense someday, while looking to show what happens to the "other guy" who got the bad end in rom-coms.

His film makes for a curious case: given the coveted Valentine season release date, it positions itself not mainly for the lovey-doveys, but for those who have lost out, those who were inches away from their own happy endings, the Jameses of the world.

Its choice of stars even reflect this: sure, Ronnie Alonte and Loisa Andalio may have found love in each other, but there was a time when both of them, they shared, were shunned for another.

As Andalio poignantly recalled: "Hindi ko masasabing hindi niya ako pinili dahil pinili niya ako. Pero nu'ng tumagal . . . doon na dumating iyong point na hindi na niya ako pinili."

The result is what looks like a simple but promising movie with leads who understand both the pain of not being picked by the one they love, and the joy of realizing the point of that pain.

Boborol and screenwriter Daisy Cayanan revealed that they wrote "James & Pat & Dave" with specifically Alonte and Andalio in mind, explaining that the young actors have exactly the type of chemistry and diligence that they were looking for.

"Lahat nagampanan nila," Boborol said.

In the movie, Alonte reprises James, his character from "Vince & Kath & James," who gets sent to a rural area by his mother to "straighten" his life and is forced to take a temporary job at a resort. He soon meets a feisty co-worker, Pat (Andalio).

Throughout filming, Alonte and Andalio said they were driven by the fact that this is their first-ever headlining movie together.

They wanted to prove to their supporters their worth, going as far as to ignore each other on set just so that they could pull off an accurate portrayal of budding lovers, and not a couple who have been together for years, like themselves.

"Una mahirap na kami kasi paano namin gagawin 'yung story na hindi kami." Alonte reasoned. "Sa set, never ko siyang pinansin, kinausap, at nilambing. Ayaw ko mabaling isip ko na kami, kasi hindi 'yun ang hinihingi ng pelikula."

Now it's difficult to judge whether they had achieved this by the trailer alone. But regardless, the determination and sincerity are there; here's hoping these efforts will lead to fans getting its message that one's story does not end just because "hindi ka pinili."
