MANILA -- Viva Films is marking its 39th anniversary this year as it targets to produce 34 movies, investing a first-time stratospheric budget of P1 billion as a sign of its confidence in Philippine cinema.

The company is leaving no stone unturned to present films for fans to watch out for this year. Everything has been lined up, from the film projects with titles, directors, cast members and some even with scheduled playdates.

To start, Viva’s Valentine’s offering, “On Vodka, Beers and Regrets,” reunites the box-office and romantic tandem of JC Santos and Bela Padilla, who were first paired in “100 Tula Para Kay Stella.” Interestingly, that 2017 film will have a sequel later this year, to be directed by Jason Paul Laxamana.

It appears that 2020 will be a busy year for Padilla, who ended 2019 with the Metro Manila Film Festival top grosser, “Miracle in Cell No. 7.” This year, she will make important film projects like the Filipino remake of South Korea’s “Spellbound.”

Padilla will also star with Korean actor Kim Gun Woo in “Ultimate Oppa,” a co-production with Reality Entertainment and Creative Leaders Group Eight. Moreover, Padilla will be working with Alessandra De Rossi in “The Wedding Breaker.”

The first-time big-screen project of Sharon Cuneta and Regine Velasquez will also happen this year in the re-imagined version of the South Korean drama-comedy, “Sunny.” Since they did a concert at the Big Dome last year, Cuneta and Velasquez will undoubtedly make more fans happier this year with their first film together.

Original Pinoy superhero, Pedro Penduko, will re-emerge on the big screen with Matteo Guidicelli in the title role, along with Empoy Marquez, Arjo Atayde and a stellar cast. Jason Paul Laxamana is also at the helm.

“It was indeed a miraculous year for us,” said Viva Films executive Vincent Del Rosario of the company's 2019 slate. “We were happy with our 2019 journey. We gave the public high quality and entertaining movies.

“Last year, we produced 19 movies. From what I gathered, that was the most that a film outfit produced. We offered our audience a diversity of choice. There were traditional mainstream fare and there were also out of the box projects.”

Some of the films that Viva produced last year were “Just A Stranger,” with Anne Curtis and Marco Gumabao; “Maria,” the company’s Netflix original movie starring Christine Reyes; “Ulan,” with Nadine Lustre; director Paul Soriano’s “Mananita”; the sexy “Adan;“ the comedy flick, “Sanggano, Sanggago, Sanggwapo”; and Kim Molina in “Jowable.

Viva Films made Christmas 2019 even merrier with Vice Ganda and Curtis’ first team-up in “The Mall, The Merrier.” Then, Aga Muhlach and child actress Xia Vigor sent many hearts weeping in “Miracle in Cell No. 7.”

“This year, we lined up more movies and there will be more chances to share with you the joy of our vision,” Del Rosario said.

“If last year, we produced 19 movies, we are making more movies this year. Almost double the number. We have gathered the best creative minds in the industry, biggest writers and directors. And matched them with the brightest stars in the land.

“There will also be strategic alliance with both local and global partners to push the envelope in terms of concept and quality. With ‘Viva Vision 2020,’ we set the trend, we achieve the unachievable, we make the impossible possible.”

“With the same partners all these years, 39 years they were there, the box-office films continue to grind with exciting projects for Viva,” Del Rosario excitedly announced.

Other movies announced include: “Hindi Tayo Pwede,” a romance-drama written by Ricky Lee and directed by Joel Lamangan, starring Lovi Poe, with young heartthrobs Toni Labrusca and Marco Gumabao.

After the back-to-back box-office success of “Just A Stranger” and “The Mall, The Merrier,” Curtis hopes to change the way we see marital affairs in “The Devoted,” directed by Jun Lana.

Leading celebrity vlogger Alex Gonzaga teams up for the first time with Xian Lim and Kylie Versoza in the wacky “Love the Way You Lie,” directed by “Mary, Marry Me” director RC de los Reyes. The movie is a co-production with Ten17P.

Meanwhile, Lim stars with Ryza Cenon for the first time in “Sawi,” written and directed by Fifth Solomon. Lim is also paired with Christine Reyes in the thriller, set in Tblisi, Georgia, “Untrue,” that premiered in the 2019 Tokyo Film Festival.

The love team that shocked the box office with 2017’s sleeper hit, “Kita Kita,” Empoy Marquez and Alessandra de Rossi spread love and laughter anew in “Walang Ka-Paris, written and directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo.

Kim Molina and real-life partner Jerald Napoles pair up in an unconventional love story, “Ang Babaeng Walang Pakiramdam,” written and directed by “Jowable” megman Darryl Yap.

Yap was also tapped for the genre-bending “Tililing,” about three nurses on their quest to escape a lock-down asylum, with Gina Pareno, Candy Pangilinan and Baron Geisler, joined by Donnalyn Bartolme, Yumi Laxamana and Chad Kinis.

Janno Gibbs plays the title role in “Mang Jose,” based on the popular rock track by Parokya ni Edgar, with young filmmaker Rayn Brizuela at the helm.

Gibbs returns with his “Sanggano, Sanggago, Sanggwapo” co-stars Dennis Padilla and Andrew E, joined by Napoles in “Pakboys,” megged by Al Tantay.

Meanwhile, Gibbs teams up with child star Vigor in the Filipino version of the Korean movie “Instructions Not Included.”

Vigor will also star with Christine Reyes in “The Wedding Dress,” while Christian Bables topbills “You F Oh.”

Dingdong Dantes goes action in “A Hard Day,” with “Heneral Luna” star John Arcilla, directed by Lawrence Fajardo, while “More Than Blue” brings together JC Santos, Arjo Atayde and Yassi Pressman.

Muhlach will star in the Philippine reimagined version of “A Man and A Woman,” that will take him to Finland for the shoot.

For the first time, too, an assembly of Pinoy superheroes is set to happen with the “Caparas Cinematic Universe,” which features Joaquin Bordado, Elias Paniki, Gagambino, Kamandag, Totoy Bato, Panday and Valora.
