Arnel Pineda, the Filipino lead vocalist of American band Journey, confessed that he once got hooked on illegal drugs when he was still a struggling singer.
In an interview with ABS-CBN senior correspondent Korina Sanchez, Pineda said he turned to illegal drugs out of disappointment and frustration in his career.
He recalled that he was always under the influence of an illegal substance, affecting not only his weight, but more importantly, his family.
During those trying times, Pineda recalled that his wife, Cherry, had already threatened to leave him when his drug abuse became uncontrollable.
Cherry said it was the darkest hour in their married life.
Pineda said it was the memory of his mother, who died when he was still young, that pulled him out of his addiction.
He said he had turned a new leaf and stopped doing drugs. He noted that it was then that he began to achieve his dreams.
Pineda was discovered by a Journey member on popular video sharing website, YouTube. Since then, he has gained worldwide fame, holding world tour performances along with his American band mates.
The singer said that because of illegal drugs, he almost lost everything. He also advised the youth against using banned substances.
