MANILA -- "This is it! It's finally happening!"
This was what Judy Ann Santos wrote after she shared that she had been cast to portray Mother Lily Monteverde for a movie about the life story of the Regal Entertainment matriarch.
Posting a photo of her with Mother Lily, she added: "Her brilliance, passion, and love for the showbiz industry is undeniable.
"She is the reason why I am here. It's an honor to be able to know you more with this project," Santos said.
The film will be directed by Erik Matti, who described it as a dream project of his.
The director ("On the Job," "Honor Thy Father") explained that the life story of Mother Lily (an "epic and crazy life story") could give an insight into the "timeline on the rise and fall, growth and decline of our Philippines cinema and we are where we are now."
Last year, Matti controversially declared that the industry is in a "state of coma," and went on to criticize his peers for churning "out last decade's greatest hits and hope to God the audience would still embrace" them.
"That's what makes [Mother Lily] a perfect subject for a movie that wants to explore the insights on a specific culture of art and entertainment in a third world country," he said.
No other details such as a planned release date, or when they do intend to start shooting were revealed.
