'Till I Met You': Nadine Lustre shines in funny slap scene

"Baka hindi mo alam, batang Sampaloc ako. Iyong sampal saka iyong sabunot ko sa iyo, warm-up lang iyon!" An irate Iris (Nadine Lustre) tells Madison (Loren Burgos), the homewrecker to her marriage, after giving her a slap in last night's "Till I Met You." She then locks her in a cubicle using a mop with a cardboard sign hanged on its door that says: "Mang-aagaw ako ng asawa. Huwag tularan."

It's a pretty funny moment reminiscent of bad teen dramas, which was also contrary to the heated exchange that was teased before. But it's also very much like "Till I Met You" to tackle such a pivotal scene in such a way — Iris facing the woman who tried to steal her husband.

The show shines when it delivers viewers something unexpected. An example of this can be found during the series' first week, when Ali (JC Santos) outright told Iris about his feelings for the man she loves. Sadly, Ali's storyline about a teen confused about his sexuality was quickly sidelined. But still, it was pretty brave of the series to even offer a potential love triangle featuring two men.

Back to Wednesday, one of its last episodes, and the show does it once again. When viewers came to expect a fiery slap scene with characters exchanging (loudly) thinly disguised expletives — a staple for most local dramas — it gives them one to chuckle at.

And while it's not particularly clever nor will it make you laugh out loud, it's still pretty funny especially when one considers the uptight format for these actress-gives-fellow-actress-a-solid-smack moments.

Apparently regressing to a lovestruck high-school brat (hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, am I right?), Iris delivers a good ol' slap to Madison, the woman responsible for splitting her up with Basti (James Reid). It was a rather weak-looking one but something that many viewers, who endured days of seeing their idols fight, wished they could have seen way sooner.

Forget about whether Iris and Basti will get back together for a moment, fans just want to see Madison drop to the ground after being handed what she deserved. "Ang tawag dito ay sampal," Iris, wearing a cheeky smile, says to the cheat, while overly dramatic drumbeats play in the background.

The off-beat feel of the scene also allowed Lustre to shine. When other actresses address the camera for these types of mildly funny scenes, it can be a bit overdone or too bland in execution. Lustre just finds the right mix needed for throwing such borderline cheesy insults while maintaining a straight face.

Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, "Till I Met You" is down to its last two episodes. It will conclude on Friday.
