"Vince & Kath & James," an entry to this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), has earned more than P100 million, producer Star Cinema announced on Wednesday.

Starring Julia Barretto, Joshua Garcia, and Ronnie Alonte, the romantic comedy was the top-grossing entry in provincial theaters since the filmfest began last Christmas day, according to the MMFF executive committee. It is also the third-highest earner based on Metro Manila ticket sales.

The movie marks another successful box-office run for Star Cinema, which had two flicks screening in theaters for the month of December. The other one was "The Super Parental Guardians," which stars Vice Ganda, the country's highest-grossing Filipino film to date with its P590.1 million take.

Combined that with the P100-million, 10-day gross of "Vince & Kath & James" and Star Cinema has earned nearly P700 million in a span of just five weeks, a feat rarely achieved by a local production studio.

Directed by Theodore Boborol, "Vince & Kath & James" centers on the three title characters and how their love triangle develops and tangles through text messaging and social media. It has received fairly positive reviews from local critics, with some comparing Garcia, who plays a shy, geeky, college student named Vince who harbors a crush on Kath, to veteran actor John Lloyd Cruz.

It was picked as Star Cinema's entry to this year's MMFF following the exclusion of "The Super Parental Guardians."
