BERLIN, Germany - The chip wars are on as AMD, Qualcomm, and Intel vie for the future of mobile PCs with processors all promising significant boosts in speed as well as power-sipping efficiency.

PC giant Acer unveiled on Wednesday several laptops powered by the AMD Ryzen AI, Snapdragon X and Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors–the latest series of notebook-oriented chips aiming to take a bite out of Apple Silicon’s dominance in power-efficient computing.

Two days ahead of the formal opening of the IFA tech expo in Berlin, Germany, Acer announced that its latest line of thin and light laptops achieved massive boosts in battery life using the new chips from AMD, Intel and Qualcomm.

Acer said its Swift 14 AI powered by Intel’s latest laptop-focused chip, also called Lunar Lake, could go up to 29 hours of video playback, and up to 23 hours web browsing.

A similar model powered by AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 processor, meanwhile could provide up to 27 hours of video playback and up to 19 hours of web browsing, Acer said.

The Swift Go 14 AI with the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core processor could go up to 28 hours of video playback “even through demanding workloads,” as well as provide up to 19.5 hours of web browsing, the PC maker said.

Acer also unveiled its new business-oriented 14-inch laptop weighing less than 1 kilogram. The company said the new TravelMate P6 14 AI is also powered by Intel's new chip, in a compact, carbon fiber chassis.

Intel had been seemingly left behind in terms of power efficiency, with laptops powered by chips from Qualcomm and even AMD getting several hours of battery life more than notebooks using Intel’s Core Ultra chips.

Intel however said its new Core Ultra Series 2 chips can match or beat the AMD and Qualcomm chips in nearly every metric.

“The debut of the newest Intel Core Ultra processor-powered AI PCs from Acer is bringing meaningful improvement to customers’ lives,” said James Lin, General Manager, Notebooks, Acer Inc.

Intel’s claims about having better battery life than those of its competitors however have yet to be verified in real world scenarios, as the new laptops have yet to be officially released.

All of the new Acer laptops are Copilot+ PCs, which use Microsoft’s AI platform, which was launched earlier this year. Copilot builds on Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI, which is behind ChatGPT.

Acer said the laptops’ new AI features help users bring their ideas to life by taking descriptions and generating new images in nearly real time.

“Live Captions can translate spoken words from 44 languages and present English speech captions in real-time, whether it is a live video, movie dialogue, or YouTube clip,” Acer said in a statement.

“Windows Studio Effects comes with AI-boosted features such as Background Blur, Eye Contact, Automatic Framing, Portrait Light and Creative Filters to improve lighting and make users look their best in their virtual meetings, livestreams or video calls,” the company said.

These AI features can be accessed with the dedicated Copilot key.

Acer has yet to announce pricing and availability for the new laptops. Other laptop vendors are expected to unveil notebooks that are also powered by the new chips from AMD, Intel and Qualcomm during the IFA tech expo which runs from Sept. 6 to 11 in Berlin, Germany.
