MANILA (UPDATE) -- Meralco power rates are climbing by P0.15 per kilowatt-hour in September.

This means the overall rate for a typical household will now be P11.7882/kWh, from last month’s P11.6339/kWh.

Meralco said this is because of a spike in the transmission charge due to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines' (NGCP) ancillary service.

This means electricity bills may jump by the following amounts:

Consumption    Increase

200 kwh            P31

300 kwh            P46

400 kwh            P62

500 kwh            P77

In a statement, the power distributor said transmission charges for residential customers went up by P0.2913 because ancillary service charges rose after commercial operations of the reserve market resumed on August 5.

Meralco said this more than offset the fall in the generation charge, which went down by P0.1547/kWh.

Meralco rates rose in July by P2.15/kwh due to a higher generation charge. It also went up in August by P0.03/kwh, due to higher transmission charge.

Meralco spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga earlier said that the generation charge is down but the transmission charge rose, resulting in an increase in the overall rate.
