MANILA -- The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday signed a memorandum of agreement with Private Sector Jobs and Skills Corporation (PCORP) to enhance the work immersion of senior high school students in a bid to boost their employability and address jobs-skills mismatch.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. witnessed the signing in an event in Malacanang.

The MOA provides for a more comprehensive work immersion experience for students, curriculum alignment that will focus on skills needed by students based on industry standards, teachers training and job fairs.

"Bibigyan natin ng menu o pagpipilian ang mga magulang, at ang mga estudyante kung ano iyong natitipuhan nilang pasukan na industriya o trabaho, ay mayroon na silang makukuhang work experience na job training, work immersion, at hindi lang mabilis na work immersion, na madali, isang linggo, kundi babad talaga sila," DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said in an interview with the Malacanang Insider.

(We'll give parents and students a menu of jobs they can choose from, where they can get work experience. This isn't just a quick work immersion, but they really get immersed.)

"Makakakuha sila ng skills at mace-certify sila kaya very employable or hire-able sila matapos ang work immersion," he added.

(They can learn skills from these and get certified so they're very employable or hire-able after the work immersion.)

PCORP is a non-profit, non-stock corporation organized by the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) Job members, together with PSAC strategic convener Sabin Aboitiz.

It consists of various industries including the IT-BPO sector, the semi-conductor industry, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PCCI), among others.

"So all kinds of industries ang andito, so makakapili talaga ang mga bata at makikita niya may pag-asa at may katuturan iyong pag-aaral niya, iyong dagdag na 2 taon na papasukan niya," he said.

(All kinds of indsutries are here, so children can really choose, and they can see that there is hope in their studies.

MATATAG CURRICULUM

For kindergarten to Grade 10, Sec. Angara intends to continue to implementation of the revised curriculum, dubbed as the "MATATAG Curriculum" drafted by his predecessor, Vice President Sara Duterte.

The execution includes implementation in phases with School Year 2024-2025 for Kindergarten, Grades, 1, 4, and 7; School Year 2025-2026 for Grades 2, 5, and 8; School Year 2026-2027 for Grades 3, 6, and 9; and School Year 2027-2028 for Grade 10.

Adjustments may be done to improve the program after DepEd conducts a study on the experience of students and teachers.

"We continue it. This is the product of several years of studying. And the direction, we are continuing direction," Angara said.

"So, whatever the learnings are for that first year, we will --- kung baga iterative iyong process. Meaning, we are willing to  change as we go along, as we learn from the experience of actual --- on the ground and then we get feedback din from  our teachers saka 'yung estudyante, ano ang kailangang baguhin, anong puwedeng pagandahin," he said.
