MANILA (UPDATED) — Jollibee Group is addressing a reported data breach that could involve the data of millions of its customers.

In a statement, Jollibee said it is investigating the incident, adding that it's e-commerce platforms are still operating.

"We have implemented response protocols in addition to enhanced security measures to further protect data against threats. Parallel to these efforts, we are working closely with relevant authorities and experts," Jollibee Group said.

Apart from its flagship fast food chain, Jollibee Groups brands include Chowking, Greenwich, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Mang Inasal, Burger King, Panda Express, Highlands Coffee, and Red Ribbon.

The company assured users that it is strengthening against future threats, while urging the public to keep their personal details safe.

"We would also like to encourage the public to be vigilant and exercise good information security practices, including keeping passwords secure and changing them often."

Data breaches increase the risk of identity theft and scams.

Cyber security group Deep Web Konek earlier alleged that hackers were selling the information of Jollibee's 32 million customers in forums for over $40 million.

Jollibee's statement comes days after health maintenance organization Maxicare reported a data breach to the National Privacy Commission. The breach, which affected the data of around 13,000 members, happened through a third-party homeware provider.

“Compromised information may include those used for booking requests, but no sensitive medical information was exposed,” Maxicare said.

Systems of the Maritime Industry Authority were also compromised over the weekend, the regulator acknowledged this week.

MARINA said Monday it sent personnel to its central office in Manila’s Port Area on Sunday when the attack was detected “to implement expeditious [measures] to ensure the protection of the integrity of the systems.”

Meanwhile, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DITC) is reaching out to Jollibee Corp. regarding the reported data breach.

“Although our Cyber Security Bureau has monitored the situation through Intel gathering and have tried to communicate with Jollibee Corp., the latter have not responded,” said DICT Spokesperson Asec. Aboy Paraiso in a statement.

“We reiterate, that although DICT is the technical Consultant of Government, it cannot force and has no coercive powers over private entities to respond to us even in reported cases of data breach or hacking, except in cases involving National Security.”
