MANILA - Interest in artificial intelligence is high among Filipinos based on recent data from Google Trends, with the Philippines currently ranking third in all searches for AI-related topics across the world.

"Only China and Ethiopia outrank the Philippines at #1 and #2, respectively," the company said.

The Philippines also ranks 4th globally in searches for generative AI over the past 12 months, Google said.

According to search engine giant, some of the reasons for the increased search interest around AI in the Philippines include the availability of AI tools and platforms that have made it easier for Filipinos to experiment with and learn about AI.

"One of the AI tools available today is Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot. It is a versatile AI assistant capable of handling various tasks like writing, planning, learning, and generating content like images and more! Gemini offers a free version for everyone and a paid version called Gemini Pro with advanced features," the company said.

In 2023, one of the most accessed articles on news.abs-cbn.com was about Google offering free courses on artificial intelligence.

The Silicon Valley giant said Google Trends provides data on the topics that people from a certain country or area are searching almost in real time, the company said. The data is measured by recording how many times a particular keyword is searched for compared to other terms within a certain period.

According to Google, the search interest around AI in the Philippines is a reflection of the country's growing technological awareness, economic aspirations, educational initiatives, government support, and the global trend towards AI adoption.

Since OpenAI opened ChatGPT to the public in 2022, the use of generative AI has exploded in popularity. Many use AI chatbots to summarize long text articles, generate drafts, transcribe audio files, and create artwork and music.

Lately, the technology has also caused concern over so-called deepfakes or AI-generated videos that use a person's likeness and voice. Cybersecurity experts have warned that deepfake video and audio have been used in scams as well as to sow misinformation.
