MANILA -- Over 1 million Filipinos are expected to flock to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) this Holy Week, the Manila International Aiport Authority (MIAA) said in a statement.

In a statement, MIAA General Manager Eric Ines said he expects a 15 percent increase in passenger volume next week, compared to the 926,755 passengers that passed through NAIA from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday in 2023.

MIAA said that in the first 14 days of March alone, 1,853,132 passengers have been to NAIA, and there have been about 132,367 daily.

For this year’s Holy Week, passenger traffic could reach 140,000 on a single day-- close to the pre-pandemic Lenten season, which recorded 1,126,501 passengers over eight days, or 140,812 passengers daily.

Ines said MIAA is prepared for this influx of passengers.

He noted that MIAA has adjusted the scheduled closure of Runway 06/24 for March 25 and 27, and April 1 and 3. From an original closure period of five hours--from 12:30 am to 5:30 am--, the runways will now be only closed for 3 hours or 1:30 a.m to 4:30 a.m.

He also said generator sets are on standby in cases of power failure. Likewise, MIAA has replacing fan coils in terminal air conditioning units to address the impact of El Nino and rising temperatures.
