MANILA - The Philippine government had a budget surplus of P55 billion ($1.2 billion) in April, exceeding the surplus posted in the same month last year by about 5 percent, the Department of Finance said on Wednesday.

The first monthly surplus this year brought the total shortfall to P57.5 billion in the first four months of the year.

The incoming government of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte plans to increase spending by up to 50 percent, bringing the budget gap to up to three percent of gross domestic product, to spur development in the countryside. -- with ABS-CBN News
