MANILA (UPDATE) -- The Department of Labor and Employment on Wednesday proposed subsidies for employers to avoid further job losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government plans to cover around 25 to 50 percent of payroll costs of employers on the condition that they avoid retrenchment, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said.

The number of jobless Filipinos grew to 7.3 million in April as the unemployment rate surged to 17.7 percent at the height of the coronavirus lockdown.

The labor chief said 2,068 companies ceased operations due to the COVID-19 crisis, leaving behind 69,022 out of work Filipinos.
