MANILA - Plastic bottles used as makeshift barriers for bike lanes along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City were removed early Wednesday for safety reasons and lack of proper coordination, transport authorities said.

Officers of the Highway Patrol Group and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority removed the plastic bottles placed by a group of enthusiasts to assist commuters using bikes, MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago said.

“Inaalis na po namin, kailangan po namin itong alisin (We removed them, we need to remove them),” Pialago said.

Under general community quarantine, select public transport are allowed to operate at limited capacity. The use of non-motorized vehicles, including bicycles is encouraged.

Some commuters use bikes to travel to and from work as provincial buses and jeepneys are still barred from the streets while trains and P2P buses operate at limited capacity.

Pialago said the group that installed the barriers would formally coordinate with transport authorities on the issue of bikers’ safety and bike lanes in the country's main highways.
