MANILA - Malacañang on Tuesday announced the appointment of a professor as the new statistician of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Claire Dennis Mapa will replace Lisa Bersales as national statistician. The latter's term ended last April 22, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said in a statement. The PSA is an attached agency of NEDA.

Prior to his appointment, Mapa was a statistics professor and dean at the University of the Philippines School of Statistics, NEDA said.

He has a bachelor's degree in statistics and master's degrees in both statistics and economics, NEDA said.
