MANILA - The Philippines' first locally-made hybrid electric train will start commercial operations on May 6, the Department of Science and Technology said Wednesday.

The air-conditioned train which runs on technology similar to Toyota Prius hybrid cars can handle 880 passengers, and was designed and built by DOST engineers and local fabricators.

DOST's Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development, which monitored the development of the train, said the Philippine National Railways would run it on the Alabang-Biñan route.
